Introduction to Salt Water
As an introduction to salt water
we asked the class what they knew about the ocean. The class gave
the following list which appears in their own words:
-
It's salty
-
Animals, shellfish, fish, seaweed,
coral live in it
-
Different sections to the beach
a. sand
b. rocks
-
Waves
-
Tides - high/low
-
Uses - swim, food, travel, jobs,
business
For the rest of the session we briefly
examined each of these areas. The following is a list of activities
we used during this portion of the class.
-
The "One Ocean" Experiment adapted
from Ranger Rick's Nature Scope: Diving into Oceans, Learning
Triangle Press.
-
Experiments on Water Pressure from
Ranger Rick's Nature Scope: Diving into Oceans, Learning Triangle
Press.
-
"Mapping the Sea Floor" from
Ranger Rick's Nature Scope: Diving into Oceans, Learning Triangle
Press.
-
Buoyancy and density experiments
as well as experiments about ocean currents from Oceans, "Make
it Work Geography".
-
Additionally, we used two readings,
"Oceans under threat" and "Ocean resources" from the book Oceans,
"Make it Work Geography" as starting points for class discussion.
We divided the class into two groups which met separately; the group read,
discussed and planned how to present the information to the other group.
These presentations were very informative and the students enjoyed working
together.
